Hafnium binary alloys from experiments and first principles

چکیده
Despite the increasing importance of hafnium in numerous technological applications, experimental and computational data on its binary alloys is sparse. In particular, data is scant on those binary systems believed to be phase-separating. We performed a comprehensive study of hafnium binary systems with alkali metals, alkaline earths, transition metals and metals, using high-throughput first-principles calculations. These computations predict novel unsuspected compounds in six binary systems previously believed to be phaseseparating. They also predict a few unreported compounds in additional systems and indicate that some reported compounds may actually be unstable at low temperatures. We report the results for the following systems: AgHf, AlHf, AuHf, BaHf, BeHf, BiHf, CaHf, CdHf, CoHf, CrHf, CuHf, FeHf, GaHf, HfHg, HfIn, HfIr, HfK, HfLa, HfLi, HfMg, HfMn, HfMo,HfNa, HfNb, HfNi, HfOs, HfPb, HfPd, HfPt, HfRe, HfRh, HfRu, HfSc, HfSn, HfSr, HfTa, HfTc, HfTi, HfTl, HfV, HfW, HfY, HfZn and HfZr ( = systems in which the ab initio method predicts that no compounds are stable). 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. First Principles Design of Ductile Refractory Alloys
The purpose of this work is to predict elastic and thermodynamic properties of Cr-based alloys based on first-principles calculations and to demonstrate an appropriate computational approach to develop new materials for high-temperature applications in energy systems. In this study, we choose Poisson’s ratio as screening parameter for identifying ductilizing additives to the refractory alloys. ...
متن کاملMagnetic phase transition in FeRh: a combined approach using first-principles calculations and quantum field theoretical methods (December 5, 2016)
Magnetic binary alloy, iron rhodium (FeRh), has attracted attention since 1938. It is known to exhibit a magnetic phase transition from a ferromagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at 350 K. While its crystal structure remains unchanged at the transition, its volume undergoes a 1% increase. In this talk, we present our studies of several magnetic binary alloys related to FeRh: FePd, MnRh, MnPd...
متن کاملThe new face of rhodium alloys: revealing ordered structures from first principles.
The experimental and computational data on rhodium binary alloys is sparse despite its importance in numerous applications, especially as an alloying agent in catalytic materials. Half of the Rh-transition metal systems (14 out of 28) are reported to be phase separating or are lacking experimental data. Comprehensive high-throughput first-principles calculations predict stable ordered structure...
متن کاملModern Band Theory of Disordered Alloys: Basic Concepts Including a Discussion of Momentum Densities *
An overview of some of the basic concepts in the modern first-principles band theory of disordered alloys is given. The question of how the notion of Bloch energy bands and Fermi surfaces generalizes to the case of the disordered system, insofar as the average electronic spectrum is concerned, is stressed. The theory is illustrated with examples chosen from the work on binary alloys; a few exam...
متن کاملFirst principles calculation of the interdiffusion coefficient in binary alloys.
The atomic mechanisms of diffusion in alloys are complex due to the variations of migration energies with environment and the correlations induced by short-range order between the different components. We present a first-principles approach for calculating vacancy-mediated diffusion coefficients in crystalline binary alloys and apply it to obtain the interdiffusion coefficient of Al(1-x)Lix. Th...
